Early releases of Windows have been known to be "problematic" in the past. However, Windows Vista had been in active development since 2004 and went through several rounds of beta testing so the product is understandably more refined.
That said, the final release of Windows Vista has its fair share of compatibility problems - with drivers and existing software. Incidentally, Microsoft has just released a list of 800 applications that are compatible with Windows Vista. You will notice that a couple of established brands are missing in that list, e.g. Adobe, although there could be other software
that works but have not paid the $10,000 or so to be tested and certified.
So if you don't mind this temporary hiccup (newer, compatible software/drivers are being released everyday) and considering that Service Pack 1 is scheduled only for mid-2007, then it is ok to buy now - especially so if you'd intended to get a new desktop or laptop.
