Windows XP was launched in October 2001 with a billion-dollar marketing campaign and to much fanfare. Windows XP marked the end of the Windows 9x Kernel and was based on the much more stable Windows NT Kernel - meaning less of dreaded BSOD.
Windows XP had better visuals, better memory management, improved security and introduced entainment (and with it, DRM) to the humble computer. XP sold 17 million copies in 2 months and more than 200 million copies in 2 years.
